Whether you own your home or rent, when there is a problem with one of the appliances it can make things difficult. If you own, you have to call the appliance repair technician and set up an appointment, if you rent, you need to call the landlord and wait for him or her to contact the professional. Either way, you are without an appliance for a while. However, if you take the time to properly maintain things, you will reduce the chances that something will break completely. Here are a few maintenance tips to keep things running.
Seals
Refrigerators, ovens, dishwasher, and clothes washers all have seals. These seals are important to keeping the unit running efficiently. If you notice that a seal is loose, stretched, or torn you should be sure to replace it as soon as possible. This will not only ensure that the temperature in your oven is right, it will also save you money on the utility bill. When the seal in your washer is damaged, you may have water going all over the place. Seals can be a simple repair that you should be able to do on your own, but if you neglect them, it might lead to something worse.
Refrigerator Coils
When you pull the refrigerator out to clean under it, take the time to clean the coils as well. The coils tend to attract grime and dust from the rest of the kitchen. This makes the condenser run harder and more frequently. Dirty coils can eventually lead to the motor failing. Take the time to wipe them down with a soft, damp cloth. You can also use the soft brush attachment on the coils to keep them clean.
Garbage Disposal
No matter how careful you are, grease and food gets put down the drain and can damage the garbage disposal. This can also cause a clog issue in the pipes. Luckily, it isn't hard to keep things running properly. Pour some vinegar and baking soda down the drain and let it sit for a few minutes. Then run the hot water. Make sure the disposal is running freely or try it again.
Keeping the appliances in your home in good working order might take a bit of time each week, but it is much better than having to call in a technician to fix something. It will not only save you money, it will make sure that the things you have for your convenience are actually making your life easier.
