2 Signs Your Microwave Oven Needs Repairing

Posted on: 29 August 2017

If you constantly use your microwave to help prepare your meals at home, you may have noticed that something does not seem right with the small appliance. If so, look for the following signs that you microwave may need to be repaired by a professional.

Inability to Fully Close the Door

If you find that you are unable to fully close the door on your microwave, you may be relieved when the appliance still works. However, if there is any gap at all, you could be faced with a serious problem.

Normally, when you cook food, the sealing gasket around the door keeps the microwaves inside the appliance. While these microwaves are safe for cooking your food, exposure to them could cause health issues

After discovering that the door will not close completely, check around the gasket to see if any food or other debris is caught on the seal. If so, remove the obstacle to see if the door will close properly. If this does not help or you think there is a problem with the gasket itself, you should have a repair person inspect the unit to see if it needs to be replaced.

Strange Noises While Cooking

Another sign that your microwave should be examined by a repair service is when you start hearing strange noises coming from the appliance while you are using it. Types of unusual sounds you may hear include rattling and grinding.

If you hear rattling, the exhaust fan may have become loose, requiring a tightening of the bolt. However, do not attempt to do this yourself. If you remove the cover and do not replace it correctly when you are finished, you risk causing a microwave leak.

If you start hearing a grinding sound and notice that the plate no longer turns, the motor may be getting ready to burn up. The noise you are hearing is the sound of the gears hitting each other incorrectly. A repairman may be able to reset or replace the gears and help save the motor from burning up.

If your microwave has started exhibiting either of the above signs, you should have a professional look at before you try to cook with it again. If you suspect this is the case, contact an appliance service like Capital City Appliance that provides microwave repair services to have them inspect it to see what needs to be done to get your microwave working properly once again.
