Washer Clogged With Lint? What You Need To Do

Posted on: 28 February 2022

When your washing machine is clogged with lint, it can cause problems with your clothing being too wet, your washing machine not draining properly, or your washing machine may have a foul odor to it. Your washing machine has a lint trap in it, much like your dryer does, but it can trap more than just lint. Locating and cleaning this lint trap is important, as it can lengthen the life of your machine. Read on for tips to help you clean out your lint trap in your washing machine.

Locating Your Lint Trap

You first need to locate the lint trap on your machine. It could be on a visible panel on the front of the machine, or you may have a base that has to be opened on the machine. You can find the manufacturer's booklet online if you don't have one for your machine already. Figure out where the line trap is located, then open it up.

Clean Out The Trap And Filter

Once located, the lint trap should contain a filter. Remove the contents of the trap and remove the filter as well. Clean the trap out thoroughly by rinsing it under warm water. Then rinse out the filter, which may contain lint, as well as other debris. If need be, use a soft-bristle brush and clean out this filter. You should be able to see water coming through the filter. If you cannot see water coming through, it may have too much soapy buildup or residue, and you should soak it in hot water to remove the buildup. Once it's clean, you can replace it in your washing machine.

Preventing Clogs

To prevent a clog in the first place, you should take some preventative measures. Be sure you are using the right type of soap in your machine—for instance, if you have a high-efficiency machine, you need to use high-efficiency soap. It doesn't get as sudsy, so you don't have soapy clothing. You should also be sure to place small items of clothing into a garment bag to prevent them from getting sucked into the drain. Be sure you also empty the pockets of your clothing to prevent change or paper from clogging your machine as well.

If you have a clog in your machine at your lint trap, you need to clean it out to prevent further issues. You should clean this trap out every couple of months to ensure your machine is working as it should and to prevent a clog. Hire a professional appliance repairman to help with this and other issues, as well as washer and dryer repair.
